Statement: Balimo College recognised as a Higher Education Institute

The Governing Council of the Balimo College is delighted to announce that it has been formally recognised as a Higher Education Institute by the National Higher Technical Education Board of the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST). This recognition has been granted in accordance with the provisions of the Higher Education (General Provisions) Act 2014, as amended in 2020, under Section 14(1)(i) and 55(4)(a).

During the extensive accreditation process, Balimo College had to demonstrate that its Governance and operations were aligned with DHERST’s National Standards for higher and technical education institution registration and program accreditation. This requirement is mandated under the Higher Education Act 2014 that all institutions meet these sets of standards to be registered as a higher education provider in the country and be registered in the National Registers. Balimo College has met these requirements in full, demonstrating that its teaching and learning is of the highest-quality, assessment processes are effective, expected student learning outcomes are achieved, and staff and students are provided with holistic support.

We are so thrilled to have been declared an accredited provider of higher education in Papua New Guinea” said Dr Brad Shaw, Chair, Balimo College. “This is a reflection of the ongoing work that has been overseen by the Governing Council and management at the College and reflects the dedication of all staff and students.”

Commencing in 2022 with an inaugural cohort of 40 students, Balimo College has increased its student intake by 40 students each year. Balimo College currently offers the pre-service Diploma and Bachelor of Primary Teaching.

We are on track to graduate a small cohort of primary teachers at the end of 2024 who will exit the program with a Diploma of Primary Teaching” said Mr Leslie Roai, Principal, Balimo College. “Most students, however, will study for a 4th year and graduate with a Bachelor of Primary Teaching at the end of 2025”.

Western Province, PNG’s largest and most remote province, faces the challenges of geographical remoteness, limited spaces in schools, and limited teachers and resources. As the first Teachers College in Western Province, Balimo College is a vital Higher Education Institute, cultivating the next generation of educators, ensuring a steady pipeline of "homegrown" teachers for the remote and rural communities across the province.

Balimo College is a joint venture of the PNG Sustainable Development Program (SDP) and the Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF). Its independent Governing Council is supported with a formal affiliation with Western Sydney University and Divine Word University. In 2025, Balimo College will open a School of Nursing, providing pathways for people from Western Province into both teaching and nursing.
